Being spammed from your own contact forms is a pain.

Many of us have experienced the pain of our phones going “ping, ping, ping” at 2am as bots hammer the contact forms on our websites. As a business owner, you want genuine enquiries in your inbox, not robot nonsense. So we’ve built our own CAPTCHA, and we’re adding it to clients’ websites for free.

Why we built our own CAPTCHA (and didn’t use a pre-built solution)

Most of the CAPTCHA systems that we’ve used in the past rely on third parties who don’t necessarily align with our values. We tend to find that they mostly have one or more of the following issues:

  • Charge per use (or start charging once you hit a “free” limit)
  • Want users to store a debit/credit card on file (Looking at you, Google…)
  • Make visitors carry out a task, such as clicking on pictures of traffic lights (sometimes repeatedly)
  • Aren’t customisable enough
  • Aren’t effective

That’s not what our clients need. You want your site looked after without surprises or faff. So we made a simple, in-house solution that keeps costs down and keeps it simple.

What does Cogio Captcha do?

Our system runs quietly in the background on your contact forms. Real people don’t see it, don’t have to solve anything or interact with it in anyway. Bots, however, get tripped up and blocked before their message reaches you.

The result is fewer junk emails and the same smooth experience for genuine customers.

Will I miss any real enquiries?

No. We’ve designed Cogio CAPTCHA in such a way that a normal human can’t trigger it when using the website as intended. That being said, we’ve also integrated a safety net. All blocked messages are stored securely so that you can spot-check anything that looks legitimate. And, as always, our team are also just a call or email away to check for you if you’re unsure. If something genuine slips through to the log, you won’t lose it.

Does it work?

Yes. In early tests we’ve seen over 82% of spam blocked, and the data this has provided has helped set out our development road map, which will see further improvements come online in the coming months.

Will my website get it?

We’ve already rolled the system out out to the majority of websites we manage. If your website is with Cogio, there’s a good chance you’re already protected. If not, we’ll switch it on for you in due course – no hassle, no work required from you.

What’s next on the road map

To ensure we don’t give away how the system works to spammers, we can’t tell you everything here, but here’s a brief overview of a couple developments we can talk about:

Optional round-up emails

You’ll be able to choose a daily or weekly summary so you can glance through recent blocked items in seconds.

Additional detection methods

The system currently relies on limited methods for spam detection. We’re already in the process of developing additional ways to detect spam to capture those that currently get through. We’ll also continue to monitor the tactics used by spammers, as well as the performance of our system to develop counter measures going forwards.

User customisation

As we add additional detection systems, we’ll begin to add options that allow website owners to customise their settings.
