Scam domain renewal e-mails are currently being sent from IDMUK.Net.

This is a widespread scam and is not targeted specifically at Cogio clients. However, one of our clients recently received one of these e-mails, so we want to make others aware.

The e-mail claimed that action was required to keep a “domain renewal notification service” active. It included the client’s publicly available business details and website address, and asked for payment of £92.00.

Although the e-mail may look convincing at first glance, this is not a legitimate domain renewal request. Cogio has confirmed that the e-mail is fraudulent.

For most Cogio clients, domain names are managed directly by us. If your domain is managed by Cogio, you do not need to pay third-party renewal notices like this. We will contact you directly if anything genuine needs your attention.

What the scam e-mail looks like

the e-mail may appear to come from:

Domain Notifications | IDM UK
info@idmuk.net

It may refer to your website address, business name, renewal date, and a payment amount. It may also include a “View Invoice” or “Pay now” button.

The wording is designed to make the message look like a domain renewal notice. However, IDMUK.Net is not your domain registrar.

Why we are concerned

The IDMUK website may look professional at first glance, but there are warning signs. Some menu links and page links do not appear to work properly, including links to pages such as About, and the social media buttons do not appear to link anywhere.

Furthermore, Cogio has confirmed that there is no company trading as IDMUK located at 82 King St, Manchester, M2 4WQ, which is the address stated in the e-mails and on the website.

Combined with the wording of the e-mail, the payment request, and the fact that IDMUK.Net is not the domain registrar, we are treating this as fraudulent.

What you should do

If you receive an e-mail from idmuk.net, do not click any buttons, open any invoice links, or make payment.

Please forward the e-mail to:

abuse@godaddy.com

and copy in:

support@cogio.co.uk

This helps ensure the issue is reported and allows us to keep track of any clients being targeted.
